BIKiNNOV Showcases Advances in E-Cargo Bike Development at Portugal Smart Cities Summit 2026 with INOVC+

BIKiNNOV participated in the Portugal Smart Cities Summit 2026, held from May 12 to 14 at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), as part of the INOVC+ stand. The space brought together several consortium partners and some of the most promising technologies developed in the fields of innovation, sustainability, and knowledge transfer to the market.

In an environment driven by collaboration between scientific, technological, and business entities, BIKiNNOV stood out by presenting three prototypes focused on sustainable mobility and the development of more efficient and accessible urban solutions.

Among the technologies showcased were two bicycle prototypes developed by BIKiNNOV, designed with a focus on mechanical innovation, structural efficiency, and adaptation to the evolving demands of urban mobility. The models attracted the attention of visitors, partners, and industry professionals due to their distinctive approach to design and functionality applied to smart mobility.

Also highlighted was a prototype of a suspension system intended for cargo bikes, developed to address one of the main challenges associated with urban freight transport: stability, safety, and comfort during riding, particularly in urban environments and on uneven routes.

The solution presented by BIKiNNOV incorporates a front suspension system with a shock absorber, capable of absorbing impacts and significantly improving the vehicle’s dynamic performance. The prototype also integrates a tilting system, allowing lateral chassis inclination when cornering, thereby increasing stability and providing a safer and more natural riding experience. Additionally, the structure applies Ackermann steering geometry principles, enabling improved wheel alignment during turns and contributing to greater maneuvering efficiency.

However, one of the most distinguishing aspects of this system is its low production cost compared to similar solutions currently available on the market. Its construction simplicity, combined with mechanical efficiency and ease of integration into different cargo bike platforms, positions this technology as an innovative, affordable alternative with strong potential for practical application in sustainable urban logistics solutions.

BIKiNNOV’s presence at the INOVC+ stand reinforced not only the innovation capabilities developed by the Technology and Innovation Center but also highlighted the importance of cooperation among entities within the Central Region’s innovation ecosystem in creating technological solutions with a tangible impact on cities and people’s lives.

About INOVC+

INOVC+ is a strategic program for Portugal’s Central Region aimed at implementing and consolidating an Innovation Ecosystem for Knowledge and Technology Transfer. Through a collaborative network involving 23 partners, the program seeks to enhance the valorization and transfer of knowledge and R&D&I results to the regional economy, continuing the work initiated under the previous InovC, InovC2020, and InovC+ programs.

The project has a duration of 30 months and a total eligible investment of approximately €4.1 million, co-financed at 85% by CENTRO2030, Portugal 2030, and the European Union, under the initiative “European Funds Closer to You.”
